Hey, good to hear from you r0dx and Acheron π
I’d love to put up a dedicated Battle City server again. To keep something like that up and running costs about $500 per year. We had a server running 24/7 from 2005 to 2011, but towards the end the problem is that we ran out of players…!
… before you donate anything, it’s the player problem that needs a plan.
Since 2011, I’ve still occasionally hosted servers. Hey man, Battle City is open source, technically anybody can host a server π
For the last two years I’ve even hosted the Battle City “Winter Classic” server that I’ve turned on Dec. 21st. I usually turn it off after about a month when nobody has logged on for over a week. During this time, about 15 different people logged on and never more than 2 or 3 were on at the same time. Not enough for anybody to have any adrenaline rushing battles like the good old days.
Now, back in the day I would have done some advertising, organized events, tournaments, and been online 8 hours a day to get things going. I don’t have the time to do that anymore. But, that’s the kind of effort it takes to launch or re-launch a game.
We would need a dedicated person to run Battle City for any server to stand a chance of success.
Every now and then someone offers to do this, but they vanish after a couple of weeks and things fall apart just as they were starting to gain momentum.
And so therein lies the conundrum.
Turning on a server is easy, but having fun addicting battles requires a bunch of people to logon at the same time so how do we get to the point that there is always 10+ players online…

WeeboParticipantWinter Classic is now offline due to the arrival of Spring. But hey, that’s two awesome Winters of orbing in a row, I’m sure the Winter Classic will be back again…
… of course, Spring would be a great time for a Green Pastures release! Any players interested?
Find me 10 players, and I’ll put a server back uo again π
WeeboParticipantFor anybody looking for information on how to run a Battle City server, here’s some info.
WeeboParticipantHey, it’s Spring! So err.. Winter Classic is now offline!
Thanks everyone who dropped by for some orbing. See you all again next Winter π
WeeboParticipantAh, well, good idea I should do that! π
WeeboParticipantHi Snowman!
There’s still a few folks lurking around. Once you have your server up and running, I’ll post an update on the website and facebook group to help let people know about it.
Good luck!
WeeboParticipantThe Winter Classic Server is back! This is for a limited time only, so get in your orbing while you still have a chance!
WeeboParticipantI was just shoveling and found the Winter Classic Server! It’s back on for a limited time only π
WeeboParticipantYes, the return of the Winter Classic… that would be cool!

WeeboParticipantBuenos Aires would crush both Huambo and Cordoba π
WeeboParticipantAs you command, Your Grace. Allow me leave to verify the status of the server monkeys, they hold the key to the realm.
WeeboParticipantoh no, not angry birds!
WeeboParticipantI gladly accept your appendages.
WeeboParticipantA game night is an awesome idea. It might be too expensive to rent a server like we used to do, but it’s definitely easy for someone to put up a temporary server for the night.
For this to work we need enough players for it to be fun ( @riseagainst, @insaneinmybrain, @cseow, @faix, @rushing, @nightwish, @lakmobes, @incyte, @antster297, @hotdiggydoggy, @platypus, @deceth) and we need good communication to make sure everyone gets the server IP address or latest version of the game needed to login.
