BattleCity 0.6.0 released! The most notable features are the Manage the Team dialog, and the ability to move the map screen around by holding Tab and moving the arrow keys, and a ridiculous amount of bug fixes. Full change log inside.

Also, if you are getting a low FPS (Found by hitting the Comms button) I have posted some fixes with this article.

I just boosted my own FPS by turning on Direct Draw Acceleration. It was disabled on my computer. If you are suffering from low FPS, try making sure that it is enabled.

go to start, then run

type cmd

then type dxdiag

Go to the display tab.

If direct draw acceleration is disabled, enable it. 😉

If its enabled and you still get low fps… err… to be continued… 😉

Method that fixed my FPS: Go to your computers display properties and click the “Settings” tab. Change the color quality from 32 bit to 16 bit.

BattleCity Command Center Goes Live on Looble

We’re happy to announce today that the Looble Network will be hosting the new Battle City Command Center website!

I’ve mentioned recently that the classic multiplayer game BattleCity was nearing a possible return and that I was assisting with the development of the game from a design and documentation perspective. After having tested some of the latest versions of the game created by ReMoTe, it became obvious that BattleCity would go online very soon. I therefore offered to put up and host the official website for the community and ReMoTe agreed!

ReMoTe also runs the game Odyssey Classic meaning BattleCity will be his second game. Since he has plans to work on developing even more games, I have agreed to assist him by running, administrating, and further designing BattleCity.

Is Battle City on the Verge of a Return?

Battle City is an old action and strategy multiplayer game created by CodeHammer back in the 90’s. After it was taken down, several different groups have tried to bring the game back to life unsuccessfully.

Back near the beginning of 2004, a new team of individuals decided to start up a Battle City project on Sourceforge. While the project is inspired by the original Battle City by CodeHammer, this is a completely unique game written from scratch in C++.

Battle City has always been one of my favorite games. I have therefore joined the project in order to help with design and documentation. I’ve also been keeping the forums busy! 🙂

The project, led by Tr4c3r and consisting of team members ReMoTe, RizeUp and SeeleJager got off to a good start. I wrote some documentation for them describing the game and features as best as I could remember to help them program it as closely to the original as possible.

However, after v0.0.4 was released things started to slow down. The good news was that even though the project was starting to look like it might not continue, unlike with previous attempts, the community would be left with source code that someone could eventually pick up and possibly complete!

Recently, ReMoTe has been in contact with me to inform me that he has continued working on the project on his own. He has sent me a demo and it’s looking good! There may be hope for a re-birth of Battle City in the near future after all!

I’ll definitely continue providing any information needed to help have the project completed!
