Since I posted the BattleCity 2.0 information there has been a lot of questions raised. I will address some of them now.
Will points be reset?
After some serious thought I have come to a decision on resetting points. The answer is: No. They will never ever be reset as long as this BattleCity is alive.
However, a new monthly Top 20 is going to be added in BattleCity 2.0. This will give anyone a chance to compete on a monthly Top 20, while still letting players keep their earned rank as a mark of experience on the battlefield. The monthly Top 20 will be displayed before the overall Top 20, and the results will be posted on The Insider each month with commentary on what happened during the course of the month.
When will it be released?
Not even I know the answer to this. However, to keep people posted on what exactly is getting done and how far it has to go, I have updated the Workboard with the new BattleCity 2.0 project. To view the Workboard, just click ‘Workboard’ on the left side of the site.
Why did you announce this if it is a far off update? You got me all excited for something that’s not coming for a while!
This is true, but I believe in a policy of complete openness in the community. If something big is coming to BattleCity, I figure you should all know about it the same time that I do. The alternative would be to leave you guys left in the dark, which I find frustrating that developers do this on other games that I play.
Note: This is not just an average update with a few new features, this is a huge update that touches almost every part of the game. Items, bullets, buildings, art, pretty much everything. I suspect over half the code will probably get rewritten for this update. It is huge and it’s going to take a long time, but it will be worth it.
More ReMoTe Commentary
Something I have found difficult to deal with in remaking old games that have been dead for many years is sometimes people remember things slightly different. BattleCity 2.0 is more than just an update, it represents a departure from trying to live in the shadow of the original BattleCity, and to build on it and improve the parts of it that were weak. While people that have known me for a long time know that I am very very skeptical of stepping away from original gameplay (why change something that works?) the updates to BattleCity 2.0 don’t change the actual game play a ton. They mostly build on the weak points of BattleCity (the TERRIBLE interface, controls, and inventory) and make the game easier to play. They also build on community aspects of the game. A big movement is being made to officially support clans and clan battles, which obviously the original BattleCity never had.
For those who loved the original BattleCity as much as I did and are a little worried to see so many changes being made to the game, keep this in mind: BattleCity 2.0 takes the game play of BattleCity closer to the original than it has ever been before by making small changes that were in the original but didn’t make it to this remake yet, while vastly improving on things the original lacked or did wrong or poorly.
