On December 21st, 2012, the sun aligned itself directly with the center of the Milky Way Galaxy for the first time in 26,000 years. According to the Mayan calendar, the fifth world came to an end in 1987, and the bridge to galactic center in 2012 marked the beginning of the next world. The time between worlds was the "Apocalypse" or "Revealing" during which humanity collectively decided the fate of the future. Of course, the Mayans were not predicting the end of the world, they simply discovered a very rare alignment in the vast cycle of time known as the precision of the equinoxes.
What the Mayans did not know, was that as we approached 2012, time began to speed up dramatically. This was due to the base frequency of planet Earth rising significantly from 7.8 cycles/second to over 11 cycles/second. As this rate continued to increase approaching 2012, the severity of storms, floods and weather anomolies began to increase as well. At the same time, the magnetic field around earth lost nearly half it's intensity. Although the exact causes are uncertain, it would seem that all of this contributed to a magnetic polar reversal at zero point, when the Shumann Resonnance finally reached its maximum of 13 cycles/second in the year 2012…
All of the above did not technically threaten the continuity of the human species in itself, though it did set off a series of natural disasters, in particular volcanic erruptions and earthquakes, which left the surface of the planet covered with craters of lava. This was definitely disastrous, but only caused a fraction of the casualties and chaos which were to come.
The reversal of Earth's magnetic poles caused damage to electrical components throughout the world, which caused airplanes and other vehicles to crash, as well as the meltdown of several nuclear power-plants. In the midst of all the panic were rumours of terrorist involvement with much of the disaster. Conflict quickly broke out in most parts of the world and before long, wars were declared and nuclear missiles were launched. The majority of the nukes were damaged from the magnetic reversal, so many were launched into the wrong countries or even detonated in place. Before long, most cities in the world were completely wiped-off the map.
As if there weren't enough problems already, it was soon discovered that the magnetic field around the Earth was also affected by the reversal, and weakened to such an extent that harmful solar rays were now able to penetrate the surface of Earth. Even in areas not significantly affected by nuclear radiation, intense solar radiation caused crops and vegetation to fail, animals to die and humans to fall prone to deadly cancers by simply venturing outside.
The world of Battlecity as we know it was all that remained. Survivors were forced to form small cities and had no choice but to eliminate other cities in order to ensure their own survival since supplies and resources were extremely scarce. The only way humans could navigate from location to location was by the use of tanks, since they offerred protection against radiation and could handle the rough and dangerous terrain of the new world.
To survive meant the need to design cities which helped protect the most vital resources, the need to strategically plan attacks on other cities, the need to be prepared defensively and the need to form alliances only to betray them once most convenient.
