Save the Battle City Server – Make a Donation!

The Battle City Server is in trouble – it’s broke. Broke as in out of gas, out of supplies, out of money. We’ve gone under – into the red, into the world of debt where server death is imminent.

But there is hope.

You have the power to save the Battle City Server. You can make a difference. If you want the Battle City Server to stay up and running 24/7, please make a donation.

Without donations the server will R.I.P.

Battle City will live on even if we can no longer afford to keep the server running – I’ve made sure of that. The game is now open source. Anybody can contribute to development or host their own server.

If we can’t afford the current 24/7 server, we’ll have to rely on members of the community hosting servers from home. It’s a cheaper solution, but it’s not the best solution. I think having a dedicated server available 24/7 is the best option, and if you agree, please make a donation so we can keep it up and running!

The current Battle City Server has been running since November 2007 – it’s already been two years! How has it survived this long? Thanks to generous members of the the community.

Thank you Nightwish, Ender, wdgoulas, Vindkast, Surge, Jizohn, Alex, Corey, Gunman, darkluigi07, OldSchool, Incyte, Spyderman, Rushing, Xeva, Bartsie, Rage_Against, Mad_Orber & Alton. Together we have raised $719.76. Including ads on the Battle City website, we’ve raised a total of $769.19.

$769.19 is a lot of money. But it’s all gone. Total costs of operating Battle City as of today are $1001.98. We’re short $232.79. Since I also want to keep the server up and running, I’ve paid that amount myself as a donation. Normally I donate in the form of time and updates. I haven’t contributed any updates to Battle City in the last year so the least I could do is make a donation to cover several months of costs.

I need your help. I’ve donated as much as I can.

These days the server is empty a lot – but it’s there. If you want to log-on to Battle City, you can. If you want to organize a battle, you can. If you just want to take your tank for a drive and build a city for nostalgia sake, you can. I like knowing Battle City is up an running, even if I’m not able to log-on very often. I know there are others who feel the same – who want the server available 24/7 even if they no longer play.

BattleCity Needs New Server!

The new 1.0 code has been a definite success and a huge step forward in the development of Battlecity.

Although from a players perspective it may seem buggy right now, from a code stand point the game is definitely much more flexible and extremely stable. The code is now multiplatform and uses databases for accounts. The winsock code, which was resposnible for some strange bugs, was completely rewritten as well.

By macking all these changes to the code, some new bugs have been found. They should all be fixed and taken care of within the next little while.

One problem remaining is that the current computer used as the server for Battlecity seems to have some possible hardware problems which are causing some issues and increased lag. Milo, who hosts BC, has a 70 ping when connected to the server which is not normal. When ReMoTe hosts and connects with the same code, his ping is 1.

ReMoTe will most likely try hosting the server himself a little bit in the future to demonstrate how much better it runs on a better server computer. However, ReMoTe cannot host from his computer permanently because BC will lag whenever he uses it for other purposes or further development. The game needs its own computer used only for hosting it.

The cost of purchasing a computer for the purpose of hosting Battlecity will be about $500. Any donations received will go towards this as well as money made through advertising services.

ReMoTe also hosts another game named, “Odyssey”. In order to handle the increased traffic of hosting Battlecity, he will need to upgrade his internet connection. The costs of this upgrade will be split between both Battlecity and Odyssey, so any donations made to Battlecity will only be used for Battlecity.

Once we are able to purchase BC’s new server, most lag related problems will no longer be an issue. Its hard to guess how many players it will hold without having tried and tested, but it will definitely surpass the 20-25 it held when ReMoTe previously hosted. The server computer will be an independent machine FAR FAR superiour to the one it was previously hosted on and his connection speed will be over 3 times faster.

Okay, I admit it looks like hosting BattleCity and Odyssey at the same time might be a tad too much for my 256kbps upstream connection to handle =P

I’ve had several people who have expressed having a location they could host the server, if you’re one of those people, read on.

Hosting requirements:

Hosting machine must be dedicated to only running BattleCity

Hosting machine must have remote administration installed – If interested contact me and i’ll give you the details

Connection needs to have a fast upstream. I will verify this with a speed test

Hosting machine needs to have a reasonable amount of RAM and CPU processing power

If you think you have access to a server that meets these requirements, contact me or Weebo in the game or make a post on the forums.
