WeeboParticipant
DarkEagle, 100% go for it anytime! The game is open-source and kept alive by the community. It’s great to hear from you and see Battle City on Discord! 🙂
WeeboParticipantAlso… we should confirm which files are from Command and Conquer as a first step…! =p
Nikita, any info you can share on the specific files and version of Command and Conquer?
WeeboParticipantNice find! For those interested in the details, see:
– https://github.com/Deceth/Battle-City/issues/76It looks like Battle City may use sounds from Command and Conquer. If anybody is interested in helping out, there are a few things we can do.
– We can look into this to see what is the license for these sounds, is there a way to obtain permissions to use the sounds, or if we can distribute them under a different license.
– I doubt C&C used sounds from Battle City, but hey, you never know, anybody know the release dates for both?
– We can work on new sounds (Just like ObiWoz created a new default graphics skin for the game)!Nikita brings up another good point about the license. The assets should probably not be under GPLv3 for those we didn’t create. The assets are on GitHub mostly as a way to make sure everything was bundled with the source code to preserve the game for anybody who wanted to keep working on it. That said, this remake project created the source code, but not all graphics and sounds. Some sounds and some art come from the original Battlecity by Codehammer. Although we were given permission to use these, if CodeHammer did not have permissions in the first place, then that’s another story…
Given that both projects date back to the mid 90’s, have no commercial value, perhaps a fair use license could be applicable in this case (tbd). For example, the version of Command and Conquer referenced has been released as freeware and EA has given others permissions to release remakes of other earlier versions per the wiki page.
For further digging, there are many links within the following site to free legacy files, but licensing info is not clear:
– https://web.archive.org/web/20100214144634/http://www.commandandconquer.com/classicAlso, on the Reddit Command and Conquer page, there are links to “Collection of various files for all c&c games, including freeware versions of Tib Dawn, RA1 and Tib Sun”
– https://www.reddit.com/r/commandandconquer/So.. it looks like the old sound files from Command and Conquer would fall under freeware at this point, but we would need to find that info specifically, then license the assets appropriately, (i.e. not GPLv3).
WeeboParticipantSee the following possible solutions, and let us know what worked:
See the post about “Visual Studio REDIST packages never deploy the DEBUG versions of the CRT files”, this may be the issue depending on how the most recent version was compiled.
WeeboParticipantBattle City is a 32-bit application, so the DLL files you are missing are available from Microsoft by downloading vcredist_x86.exe. Some Battle City developers are using Visual C++ 2012, while others are using Visual C++ 2010 so try installing both packages below if you’re missing DLL files. (You do NOT need to move any files to your Battle City folder)
Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 (vcredist_x86.exe)

WeeboParticipantThe current release is the same version everybody used to play compiled back in December 2012! What has changed since then is everyone is using a newer computer and newer operating system (Windows 10) which may create some compatibility issues these days.
That said, Battle City does still work on Windows 10! Jolesman has a server up with a bunch of people playing several months back. If you run into trouble next time a server is up, hopefully someone has already had the same problem and can help you out.
It is possible to compile a 2018 version… the problem is there’s not too many people to help test it out/fix bugs!
WeeboParticipantUnfortunately Jolesman’s server is now marked as OFFLINE. Let me know if it goes back up and I will update the status!

WeeboParticipantI’ve been hiding and trying to find my acorns for years…
Some folks are still around. There isn’t a permanent server right now, but every now and then someone hosts one for a bit 🙂
WeeboParticipantWhen you download Battle City, the game also comes with the server. Go to the /server/ folder and open bcserver.exe.
You are now running a Battle City server!
… the tricky part is then making sure other players connect to your server. To do this, their version of the game needs to connect to your servers IP address. If you get that far, post here for more help!
WeeboParticipantYou can find your external IP address using this website:
Next, you will need to access your router settings and setup Port Forwarding.
Battle City is running on port 5643.The best way to setup port forwarding is to find the model # of your router, then search for port forwarding instructions for your device.

WeeboParticipantSign me up for beta testing! 🙂
WeeboParticipantAye, me n’ me nuts arrr rdy for action!
WeeboParticipant“Corporate Heaven” was a multiplayer game by CodeHammer where you would compete against other businesses.
Back in the day the website was on Warzone at corpheaven.warzone.com
Unfortunately nobody ever brought this game back to life, R.I.P.
WeeboParticipantBattle City is open source, anybody can download the source code for free and make any changes they like. An Android version would be awesome!
