I actually believe that.. but yeah, I checked up on BC for a few weeks after posting. Didn’t see a server go up. I did, however, manage to use Visual Studio to run the server and play a little. Can’t remember my city designs anymore. Ah well!
darkluigi07ParticipantI think there’s a problem with the current release that’s out there though. Last time I tried it, it’s complaining about some file (can’t remember off the top of my head), but it’s due to the code being compiled for debugging or something along those lines.
darkluigi07ParticipantI know this is late as heck, but I agree with some of your points. There are some pieces of the gameplay that need to change to help with the game balance. However (if BC hasn’t changed from the time I played) I think the bigger factor was poor new player retention which was a result of a lack education for new players.
I remember getting new players every now and then, but too many didn’t know what to do. Aside from the game play objectives of maintaining a city and orbing other cities, basic controls can get pretty confusing for new players. In the past, I remember talking about tutorials or playing against bots, but something as simple as being able to set your key bindings can go a long way. Once people know what tools they have to work with, they can begin exploring how to use them.
Another problem for new players was that they would join a new city, and end up god knows where on the map without doing anything. Once they were out of their city limits, they can’t build, which then leads even more confusion as they try to pull up the building menus and build outside of their zone.
I remember reading that Rise Against had suggested we try moving this game onto Steam to try and take advantage of the large community there. I agree in that going to Steam would be the best option at some point, but until we address these issues, we are not going to be able to build/grow a player base. There is a lot of work that would need to be done first.
TL;DR: in my opinion, Battle City died as a result of confusing gameplay/controls. Until these are addressed, we’re stuck.
