Dear minions,
Do you want to run a Battle City Server, but don’t have an extra computer lying around? Wouldn’t it be great if you could run a Battle City Server right on your main PC, without interfering with the rest of your computer activities? Here’s an idea, create a virtual machine!
What is a Virtual Machine?
A virtual machine is a computer inside a computer! Best of all, you can do it for free using Virtual Box (https://www.virtualbox.org/) and Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/). In fact, this is the setup used by the Battle City Winter Classic Server.
Step 1 – Download Virtual Box
Step 2 – Download Ubuntu
Step 3 – Create new Virtual Machine
Install and Open Virtual Box
Click New
Give the virtual machine a name. The idea is to use this machine for one thing only, running Battle City. Why? It protects your system. If there is an error or it crashes, only the virtual machine crashes, not your computer. If there is a bug, it only affects the virtual machine. If somehow there is a security vulnerability and someone tries to hack you, the worse case scenario is they gain access to the virtual machine which will have nothing on it besides battle city and ubuntu, a free operating system.
Select Operating system: linux
Version: Ubuntu
Select RAM: This depends on your PC and how much you want to dedicate to Battle City. The more the better, but you still want your PC to run smooth. How about 1024 MB (1 GB of RAM). You can always increase/decrease this later.
Next, create a new start up disk. The type doesn’t really matter, but since we’re using Virtual Box, use VDI.
Use a fixed size disk. It’s faster. We want that.
The disk doesn’t need to be very big… The recommended minimum is usually 8 GB, so go with that.
Create!
Step 4 – Start the Battle City Virtual Machine and Install Ubuntu
Start the Virtual Machine you just created.
Open the ubuntu.iso file (You downloaded this in Step 2!)
Start it up.
Select “Install Ubuntu”.
Check box to download updates while installing
Do NOT install third party software.
Select “Erase disk and install Ubuntu”. Don’t worry, it’s talking about the virtual machine disk, the 8GB you set aside earlier.
Install!
Setup your username and password. and give your ubuntu pc a name.
Restart and login!
Step 5 – Download the Battle City server
Go to http://battlecity.org
Click “downloads”
Download battlecity.zip
Open battlecity.zip, select the “server” folder and extract to the desktop (or anywhere you prefer).
In the left hand menu open the “Ubuntu Software Center”
Search for “WINE”
Select “Wine Windows Program Loader” and Install (battle city won’t work in Ubuntu without this)
Open the “server” folder.
Right click “bcserver.exe” and select “Open with Wine Windows Program Loader”
A black console screen will pop up with a bunch of text. You’re server is now running!
Congratulations, you’re now running a Battle City Server in an Ubuntu Virtual Machine!
